Selective proper name anomia in a patient with asymmetric cortical degeneration

All cases of selective anomic deficit for proper names described until now are a consequence of focal cerebral lesions. In the present paper, we report the case of a patient, AF, with a deficient access to proper names of persons and normal access to common names probably subsumed by a degenerative process of the left cerebral hemisphere. MRI evidenced an atrophy of the left temporal lobe and SPECT highlighted hypoperfusion of the left hemisphere. Neuropsychological examination documented a deficient production of proper names belonging to famous personalities both on visual presentation and verbal definition. Article considers how to translate into Latvian the proper name of Ἀπόστολος Παῦλος in New Testament, either Pāvils or Pauls. The first case is chosen by tradition, but author argues that the second choice is more in correspondence with how Greek word Παῦλος would be rendered into Latvian.

Sodom (in Polish: Sodoma) does not exist. Although this Palestinian town has been known since prehistoric times and it is mentioned in the Bible, there is no archaeological proof which would confirm its location. In 2011, the name Sodoma was removed from the official list which includes Polish equivalents of geographical names of the world. However, the onym is still used in the Polish language. Aineistona tässä tutkimuksessa oli asianomainen romaani, sekä alkuperäiskielisenä versiona että suomenkielisenä käännöksenä. This article focuses on the place that proper names originating from rock, or popular music in general, take or could take in dictionaries of proper names. It starts with an overview of onomástica published thus far, revealing a limited interest of Polish researchers in proper nouns related to this form of artistic activity. This discovery prompted the author to share his suggestions regarding such an onomasticon, or even onomástica, where names from popular music and specific categories would take a central place.
